The site of the school was taken by proclaimation for a public school (NZ Gazette, 13 oct 1960, No 66, page 1606) in 1960. The school was opened in 1969 and is named after Sir George Manning (Mayor of Christchurch City 1958-1968.) Photos of Sir George and Lady Manning are on display in the school library.

The holy grass between the main teaching block and the technology block, holds 4 memorial trees. Three Gingo trees planted in 1969, to acknowledge the Canterbury Education Board, the construction team and architect A further tree planted to one side is a memorial to a student who died in an accident in the Port Hills (197?)
