1969 – 1979
The site of
the school was taken by proclaimation for a public school (NZ Gazette,
13 oct 1960, No 66, page 1606) in 1960. The school was opened in 1969
and is named after Sir George Manning (Mayor of Christchurch City
1958-1968.) Photos of Sir George and Lady Manning are on display in the
school library.
The holy grass between the main teaching block and the
technology block, holds 4 memorial trees. Three Gingo trees planted in
1969, to acknowledge the Canterbury Education Board, the construction
team and architect A further tree planted to one side is a memorial to a
student who died in an accident in the Port Hills (197?)
