Welcome
Year 7 and 8 students are special!
Emerging adolescents are an exciting group of young people.
Manning Intermediate is a school that specializes in
teaching and supporting this age group; it is what we do!
We work with our students, your children
for only two years, we are very focussed on meeting their
needs. Manning Intermediate’s key tasks are to provide
quality learning opportunities for our students, and to
encourage and support them to make the most of those
opportunities. We are committed to making time spent at
Manning Intermediate successful and rewarding for all our
students.
Manning Intermediate staff and
board believe that emerging adolescents learn best when:
·
Achievement and progress are celebrated
·
They are encouraged to search for and accept
challenges
·
They have opportunities to learn and
contribute
·
They are given clear, consistent, supportive
and fair boundaries
Manning
Intermediate provides resources, facilities and programmes
designed specifically for emerging adolescents. Our staff
have made a conscious choice to work with students at an
Intermediate School because this age group is incredibly
special and deserves a targeted education. This commitment
to the students makes a huge difference to what staff and
students can achieve.
We place a
great deal of importance on the partnership that exists
between the home and the school in the education of our
students. You are welcome to arrange a visit to the school
to discuss how we can help your daughter or son reach their
potential.
We are proud of the achievements of our students and
staff, and are committed to making every year better than
the year before.
Manning
Intermediate. It’s your choice.

Curriculum
The Arts
Learning
opportunities are provided in Visual Arts, Music, Drama and
Dance. The quality of our visual artworks, choir and dance
groups are very high. Specialist art and music rooms are used.
The school has appointed a specialist visual arts teacher to
support our programme for 2010.
Additional
music/instrumental lessons are available within the school day,
but are at an additional cost. Interested students need to make
sure they talk with our head of Music and watch the newsletters
for information particularly at the beginning of the year.

English
Our focus for
the English programme for all students is to ensure the highest
possible standard of reading and writing literacy. The reading
programme regularly achieves very high gains in comprehension
levels for students.
The school
English programme makes extensive use of our library. The
library is well resourced with all books being focussed on the
interests of year 7 and 8 students.
Additional
programmes are in place to support students with remedial or
extension needs, some of these programmes occur within the class
while others will see students working outside of there normal
class.

Mathematics & Statistics
Mathematics is
an important focus for all students at Manning Intermediate.
Numeracy is key to this focus with the school having joined the
Ministry of Education's Numeracy project this year.
We make the most
of opportunities for our students to extend themselves by
participating in a range of extension activities including
Cantamaths and international testing programmes.

The school is
well equipped with Social studies resources, which allow for
staff to work with students on topical issues and areas of
interest that are wide ranging.

Technology
We have an exciting new technology programme in development. Each student will experience
technology modules based around hard materials,
electronics, food, fabric and information/communication
technologies over their two years at Manning Intermediate.
The programme is staged so that students firstly learn skills
specific to an area, they can then use the knowledge they gain
in earlier modules to design and create with more independence.
Information
Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum, with desktop
and laptop computers available for student use, both in a
specialist room and general classrooms.

Te Reo/ Kapa
Haka / Mau Rakau
Te Reo Maori is
part of every classroom, but this is limited to some extent by
teacher expertise. The Tikanga class has a greater use of Te Reo
than other classrooms.
The Kapa Haka
group is of a high standard and is open to children of all
cultures and practises and learns new skills every week.
We have an
experienced Mau Rakau Tutor who leads a programme at the school
(at no cost to students)

Pasifika
The school has
an established Pasifika Dance group that practices on a regular
basis. Membership of this group is not restricted and children
from a wide range of cultures participate.

Learning
Support
We had two priorities, excellence and opportunity. Every student
has the right and need to be pushed to achieve. Manning Intermediate has always
focussed on the needs of every student and will continue to do
so. We also need to recognise that every year the students
change. Therefore the programmes we run need to be very flexible
so we can adjust to the needs of our students.
We have a strong
Learning Support Programme, which runs alongside our regular
class programmes. It has three strands, remedial support, boost
support and gifted support. Remedial support programmes focus on
our delayed learners, particularly in reading and mathematics.
The ‘boost’ support programme focuses on those students who are
doing OK, but need a bit of a push to take off. Students can
move through or ‘graduate’ from this support programme very
quickly.
'Gifted’
support is focussing on students with
particular skills in a variety of areas. The curriculum areas we
cover at any time change throughout the year, as will the
students we are working with. Over time programmes ‘evolve’
to meet the needs that we have identified for the group of
students we are working with, as a result the programme and how
we use staff could look different from term to term, or from
year to year.
These programmes are
additional to the fantastic deal our kids get from their regular
classroom teachers. We are always looking for ways of improving
the opportunities we give to every
single student at Manning Intermediate.
